Publication on the application of the Circular Economy in the metal processing industry


The Circular Economy offers a wide range of solutions for increasing resource efficiency, which aims also to reduce environmental impacts. In the steel industry, the focus has so far been on the established recycling measures, which has already contributed significantly to reducing environmental impacts. At the same time, a large number of circular strategies thus remain unaddressed.

The case study shows how the circular strategies enable the comprehensive redesign of a production process in the context of steel. The results show that the interventions contribute to narrowing, slowing and closing material flows. This not only results in increased material efficiency, but also significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions and energy requirements. The study also illustrates that caution is needed as auxiliary processes have the potential to offset the savings.
