Within the research project “EnBV” funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology of Germany the Department of Processing and Recycling accompanied the project partners TIG Wessel Umwelttechnik GmbH and Entsorgungsgesellschaft Westmünsterland mbH aiming to improve the productivity of biowaste treatment by increasing the energy-efficiency.

The main goal of the research project was to precondition the biowaste by implementing a screw press before the common composting process. Thereby, easy degradable organics can be extracted beforehand into a liquid phase while the depleted biowaste is brought into windrow composting. As a result the retention time of biowaste in the composting process is decreased while the overall throughput can be increased. This leads to an overall smaller specific energy demand for the biowaste conversion to composts meeting the quality standards. The liquid phase gained can additionally be used for biogas production in adapted fermentation plants.

The research project (project number 0327846 A/B) was funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology of Germany (BMWi) on the basis of a resolution of the German Parliament.
