The International Conference on Optical Characterization of Materials (OCM-2021), organized every two years by the Karlsruhe Center for Spectral Signatures of Materials (KCM), took place on 17 and 18 March 2021. This year, the event was hosted online. In a total of 18 presentations, the latest findings and developments in the fields of imaging and data processing algorithms and sensors, as well as their applications in the food, agricultural, raw material and recycling industries, were presented to an international expert audience.

The Institute for Anthropogenic Material Cycles (ANTS) was represented by Mr. Nils Kroell, PhD student at ANTS. In the presentation and conference paper "Fine metal-rich waste stream characterization based on RGB data: “Comparison between feature-based and deep learning classification methods", Nils Kroell presented results on sensor-based material flow characterization of metal-rich fine fractions by using machine and deep learning classification methods.

The paper by Mr. Kroell and co-authors was awarded the Best Paper Award of OCM-2021 and a book prize. The conference proceedings and the lecture videos are available online.
